Wineries, cheap prices, and scenic expanses

We drove around the area and stopped off at two wineries this afternoon.

There are a couple of official appellations here in Washington state (Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley, Red Mountain, Columbia Gorge, and Horse Heaven Hills). I hadn’t tried much wine from the Pacific Northwest before today. The wines are pretty good. Apparently the Columbia Valley region in Eastern Washington state is a good place to grow grapes. The low rainfall (15-20 cm per year) and easy access to irrigation (from the Columbia river) allows the growers to control the watering, and the soil has good drainage being sandy loam on top of volcanic rock, and the winters are mild, among other factors.

The first winery we stopped at was Columbia Crest, only a half hour or so drive from my parents house. On the way back to our parents we stopped at one much closer, Bookwalter winery.

At the Bookwalter winery we also tasted some wines and had some cheese and a bit of proscuitto. It was all good stuff, but the thing that sticks with me is that it was all so cheap! For tasting of six wines for the four of us plus the cheese and other stuff we ate plus two bottles of wine I paid less than $70!! In Tokyo, we usually spend at least that much eating out at a regular restaurant for two. Things are so cheap here in the U.S.

On the way back, before stopping at the second winery, we took a scenic route through the Horse Heaven Hills. We stopped at a scenic vista overlooking the Yakama Indian Reservation. It view was gorgeous, in the distance we could see the Cascade mountain range. In the short time I spent here as a kid, I never got around to appreciating the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Anyways, that’s America. Cheap stuff and big expansive vistas.

Christmas day (+ 2 days)

It was Christmas just the other day. And it was also the first day of Hannukah. So belated Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah.

We had the traditional present opening, with each one of us taking turns. Everyone seemed satisfied with the presents we brought. That’s very fortunate since we had little to no idea what the various members of my family would have liked. Although, my parents and I actually ended up getting the same book about Paris (a collection of essays) for my wife. Whoops. I was afraid that something like that would have happened as we did end up getting various guide books.

State side

We’re in the U.S. now, visiting my parents. We had to fly over on seperate flights. It was a little bit stressful, especially since U.S. immigration and customs is a nontrivial process. I went through customs in San Jose while my wife had to go through customs in both Vancouver and Seattle (twice!!). Fortunately there weren’t any problems and we were able to meet up in Seattle (phew!).

My parents live in the Eastern part of Washington state in the “Tri-City” area, which is composed of three cities (Richland, Kennewick, Pasco) each roughly seperated by three rivers (Columbia, Snake, and Yakima). I only spent the last two years of high school out here, so I don’t feel very much connected at all to this place. In fact I feel much more connected to Tokyo, even though I’ve only been there for half a year. But brother still live here and my parents are building a huge new house in a nearby neighborhood (which unfortunately was not yet finished before our visit) so we’ve come to visit for a little while during Christmas. We’ll go back and spend the newyears in Tokyo with my wife’s family.

My wife blogged a little about this here on her blog.

Jiho Christmas Party

Christmas cake for us from the Jiho guys

there are so many earthquakes in Japan.

Again up near Miyagi-ken (宮城県) and out under the ocean. They have been getting so many sizeable ones up there recently. Up there it was shindo 4, down where we are living in Tokyo it was shindo 1. They’ve been having a lot of earthquakes up there. This one was at 3:32 am (!) and was one of the first ones during the middle of the night that we have felt.

Visa appliction submitted!

I submitted our visa applications this morning at the French embassy. That takes a big weight off our shoulders.

It takes one week to process the application. We are actually leaving for the U.S. to visit my parents on the 22nd, and the visa should be done the day before, if there are no problems. It is always a bit disconcerting when I also have to submit my passport so I hope everything goes smoothly!

I brought all the necessary forms, documents, photos, etc for the researcher visa to the embassy, along with plenty of copies. It was a very good thing that we made and brought extra copies because I needed more than I thought. Of the documents we each needed our own separate set of copies, rather than one set for the both of us. (I still think it is somewhat silly that they won’t make a copy for you if you end up one short, however, one is never far from a convenience store with a copy machine in Tokyo)

Fortunately, the person who looked over our applications was Japanese (and not French), so when problems arose they weren’t compounded by communication barriers.

Almost everything was in order except that they told me that my wife needed a Schengen visa application, rather than the long term visa form that I had brought already filled out. This was a bit confusing to me since the Schengen visa is only for a 3 month short term stay (and is valid for a number of EU countries) and nowhere had we read that she would need this type of visa application, rather than the long term one. Fortunately, there weren’t any extra requirements on the documents for the visa for my wife.

Anyways, it is all submitted and now I just have to go back next week and hope for the best. With any luck we should be able to get our visas just before leaving for the U.S.!

multiple earthquakes!

We were watching Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets tonight on television. It’s probably the third time we’ve seen it. My wife was studying for her French exam tomorrow while watching (well, half studying). All was well until… the shaking starts. It seems to be just slightly perceptible at first and it often makes me wonder whether or not I just imagined it. But then I see the flowers on top of the television shake and I know it’s an earthquake. Next is apprehension as we wait to see whether or not the shaking becomes more intense.

Fortunately the earthquakes* were both small tonight. * Yes, earthquakes. There were two earthquakes tonight, almost back-to-back, within 19 minutes of one another. The first was pretty close, but deep below the ground (magnitude 4.3). The shaking was very slight and it lasted only a few short seconds. The second was actually more powerful (6.4) and the shaking lasted a bit longer. However, the epicenter was much farther away, to the Northeast and below the ocean, so it was not felt so strongly where we are. I guess that the second wasn’t an aftershock and it wasn’t caused by the first because the epicenter was so far away from the first; it probably was a coincidence that it happened soon after the first. Interestingly enough the first was actually a shindo 2 and the second a shido 1 here in Bunkyo-ku, even though the second felt stronger.
