Today's quater-finals

The interesting match of today will be the Germany-Argentina game at 5pm. The Ukraine-Italy matchup is later at 9pm…

I wish I could watch the Germany-Argentina game… Both teams have been quite good. It will be a letdown for either one to lose. I’ll have to give the advantage to the home team, however. I’ll even go out on a limb and root for Germany (now that I’m no longer indefinitely doomed to rooting for the loosing team).

… Though the German team will have it’s hands full since Argentina is coached by the prime minister of France. Ok, just kidding but seriously, the Argentia coach, José Pekerman, bears an uncanny resemblance to the French prime minister, Dominique de Villepin.

Pekerman = de Villepin ?? You decide…

On to the quarter-finals!

France made it through by playing well in the second-half against Spain and coming out on top 3-1! I guess that ended my run of bad luck supporting teams that end up in defeat. Zidane scored the final goal and France finally looked alive for the first time this World Cup.

France will play Brazil on Saturday. Can they repeat the feat from the 1998 World Cup?? I’ll push my luck and root for France to pull off the upset.

Spike in European visitors…

Welcome denizens of the great countries of Europe!

I’ve noticed that there has been a recent spike in the number of European visitors to my blog.

At first I thought that it was due to my smart tagging of World Cup Soccer, i.e. La Coupe du Monde, in some of my recent blog posts. However, many entry pages were actually either from searching “paris” or “food”. A good combination, no?

If you are really interested in Paris and food, you should head on over to one of my favorite blogs, なせばなるなんとかなるさ (also on the righthand blogroll). Sorry, it’s mostly in Japanese, with only the occasional post in French or English. However, there are usually plenty of pictures to go with the posts about food and Paris (though the more recent posts are more text as they have been about World Cup Soccer).

Summer break for Judo

Today was the last day of Judo practice before the summer break. The gym, operated by Mairie de Paris ( the city of Paris), is closed for the summer, from the beginning of July to the beginning of September. This corresponds to the end of the school year and the summer holiday for students in France.

I suppose there’s no particular reason for it to be closed, but everyone needs a vacation now and then, even gymnasiums!

During the summer there is still practice at the L’Institut du Judo, referred to as “Le dojo d’été” (The Summer Dojo). It’s a bit farther and not as convenient. I don’t want my skills to degrade. However, I think I’ll use the extra freetime to take up yoga with my wife and finally enroll in some proper French classes… Still, I miss the Kodokan.

World cup all the time…

We watched both games today. Germany-Sweeden and Mexico-Argentina.

The Germans easily ran roughshod over their opponent Sweden, though they had a man advantage for most of the match. Still, it was fun to watch.

The Mexico-Argentina game was quite a bit more suspenseful. That went into overtime after a 1-1 draw at full time. Though we had been cheering for Mexico, they eventually lost 1-2… In fact, most of the teams that we’ve been rooting for haven’t done so well. Hmmm… Would it be easier just to root for teams like Brazil?

France advanced!

We’ve been managing to follow most of the world cup games. France did win their game 2-0 over Togo and advance from the group phase, though they hadn’t been so impressive up until that point and we aren’t so optimistic about their chances… Still, that at least gives us a team to root for in the next knock-out phase.

The Italians…

We hear sounds coming from one of the apartments directly above ours. This one has been dubbed the “Italian” apartment since it is owned by an Italian and it seems to be occasionally rented out to vacationing Italians. However, that the apartment is occupied is actually rather rare. Since we’ve lived here it has been mostly quiet. The last time that anyone was staying up there was when we had the massive leaking from the ceiling into our kitchen.

That has since been fixed. However, a week ago we noticed a very tiny amount of leaking after hearing sound from the Italian apartment. When we went upstairs to check, they had already gone. It has been quiet until now. I guess we’ll find out if we still have the leaking problem soon enough!

…more World Cup letdowns

Well, the first phase in Le Coupe du Monde is winding down.

Yesterday was a big disappointment. First, the US had a chance to go through to the second round but was defeated by Ghana 2-1 and thus eliminated.

… And then, the Japan-Brazil match…

We went out to watch the match in the evening between Japan and Brazil. We spent the first half at a pub along the Seine, across from Notre dame. It was a nice pub and not many people were there, certainly no Brazil fans. However, midway through the first half, a group of noisy Americans arrived and started louding going on about their raucous sexual exploits and strategies to “gangbang” (in their own words) various girls. That was a bit disturbing so we moved during halftime to a different place to watch the game. The new place was more like a café, but it had a large screen TV. It was filled with people, but mostly people having dinner, though the people engrossed in the game were mostly cheering for Brazil. We were the only ones rooting for Japan, so it was a bit lonely for the Japan cheering section.

Japan actually scored first in the first half, which was a bit of a surprise, but it actually gave us a fleeting hope that Japan might be able to pull off an upset. However, up until that point, Brazil didn’t really seem to be trying, even though they made a number of nice shots on goal that forced Japan’s keeper to make a number of nice saves. So, having first gone one down, Brazil picked up the pace and got a demoralizing equalizer in the last 20 seconds of stoppage time before the half.

Brazil scored three more times before the end of the game and, needless to say, it wasn’t all that fun to watch from Japan’s side. Better luck in four years, I guess…

… the only team we have left to cheer for is France. Next up: vs Togo!

More world cup soccer…

It’s half-time in group E. The US still has a chance, but they must first win against Ghana and hope that Italy beats Czech. Italy is doing its part to put away Czech, but the US is faltering against Ghana. It’s difficult as they are down 2-1, but not yet impossible! The broadcast is streaming live from the BBC, but only to within the UK… too bad!

…The Japan-Brazil match will be up later this evening. Japan has only to beat Brazil by 3-0 to advance to the next round. Piece of cake! … but, seriously, maybe they can redeem themselves and play for “national pride” by tying Brazil… They’ve done it before! がんばれ!ニッポン!ニッポン!

… By the way, how does anyone get any work done around here in Europe during the World Cup??

Tenacious snails

Yesterday, I saw a snail crossing the road, in the middle of Paris, on my way to work. It was a large escargot snail that one can find in France (the snails here are quite large!). I was a bit surprised to come across it because typically you find such snails in a more ‘natural’ environment, rather than an asphalt and concrete jungle. The snail was crossing in the crosswalk, obeying basic pedestrian traffic safety precautions. It’s body was thin and quite elongated, indicating that it was probably making haste (relatively speaking for a snail). It had almost finished crossing the street and I was amazed that it had survived that long without getting crushed by a passing car or pedestrian, even if it was on a smaller side street. How long had it been travelling like that??

This morning I didn’t see the crushed remnants of the snail. I wonder if it got to where it was going…
