Gaijin in Tokyo

Well we got our new cartes de séjour today from the Préfecture de Police. We went in the morning and there wasn’t too much of a queue. Things went alright and we got our new residence permits.
The only bump wasn’t really a bump, but it was funny enough to note. When we advanced to the desk to pick up our cartes and were met with a “attendez s’il vous plaît!” and a truly hideous scowl. Apparently the woman attending the desk wasn’t yet ready! It fit my image of the typical disgruntled administrative fonctionnaire so perfectly that I found it almost farcical. I had to restrain myself from laughing out loud. However, after that when it was our turn, the woman was considerably more pleasant. In the end, we were able to get what we came for within about 15 minutes.

One new development is that our titres de séjour were renewed for a full year, rather than the additional six months that we’ll be staying. That takes a bit of the pressure off the rush to leave by the expiration of our residence permits at the end of our stay. One unpleasant thing about living abroad is that one has to frequently worry about one’s legal status, for example staying past the expiration of a residence permit, which can be revoked at any moment. Still it feels a bit better knowing that we have legal status well past the end of our séjour.

… Now if they’ll only pay my salary on time…

Update: So I will get paid, but not until next week. Oh well, I guess a week late is par for the course in France. The even better news is that I will be reimbursed for my travel expenses to a conference last November and we finally got reimbursed for something else that we were beginning to expect that we would never see happen.

Tomorrow we’ll go to the prefecture de police to pick up our new cartes de sejour. Knowing France, I’m not so sure that everything will go smoothly. I half expect them to tell us that our cartes are not yet ready or that they are missing one document that I was supposed to send to them (and that no one told me about, such as seems to happen often here).

Je n’aime pas les films doublés. Meme si il est doublé en ma langue maternelle. Donc on cherche pour les films version originale (avec sous-titrage) et pas les films version français (doublé).

Bien sur on a besoin de pratiquer plus de français. Mais si on voit un film, je préfère de lire les sous-titres français que voir un film doublé. Pour voir un film en français, je préfère de voir un film français (avec sous-titrage, pour apprendre).

Cependant on n’est pas encore allé voir un film français. Néanmoins, par hasard, c’était presqu’on avait fait l’autre soir. Vendredi soir on est allé voir le film americain La Nuit au Musée (Night at the Museum).

Avant d’être aller au cinéma, on a recherché bien sur l’internet (site city vox) les horaires des séances version originale (VO).

Mais on est allé et après avoir assis on regarde autour l’un et constate qu’il y a beaucoup des enfants dans l’audience. Ça nous a fait demander si on s’est trompé. On a regardé son billet et découvert qu’il était version française!! Zut alors! Mais bon. C’était déjà fait donc on a decidé de reseter. Après être rentré, on a regardé sur l’internet encore une fois et noté que les renseignements sont erronés.

Enfin, ce n’était pas mal pour practiquer le français. Le film n’est pas cérébral est la parole c’est simple. Donc ce n’était pas très difficile de suivre.

Peut-être il faut qu’on aille plus aux films français.

As someone said “on peut dire ce que on veut des institutions françaises, mais ils flottent mieux que le titanic”.

How do people live in this country? France is certainly a first world country but many of its institutions at times often seem to function at third world levels. For example the French postal system. My wife’s grandmother just received a return piece of mail that she had sent to us in November. Certainly these things happen from time to time in the U.S. as well. However, the frequency at which they happen in France seems to be an order of magnitude or two higher. And then when things don’t work, people throw up their hands. Que vous vouliez? C’est la France!

Aujourd’hui j’ai utilisé cette phrase «pas forcément» en français que je suis sûr que je n’avais pas appris directement de mes études. Mais tout de même je l’ai utilisé correctement, naturellement, et sans penser. Après avoir fini la conversation j’ai noté que en fait je ne connaissais pas cette phrase. Donc je me demandé où je l’ai appris. J’ai toujours l’occasion de parler avec mes colleagues en français. Donc je dois l’avoir appris par mes expériences mais sans penser.
