Spring is just around the corner…

Today it was warm enough to work without wearing my jacket. It’s starting to get nicer here in Paris. Pretty soon it’ll be April..

Linux Matlab complaint

Not another segmentation fault! Matlab often crashes. Like just right now. It usually happens when drawing or updating graphics, for example just now after I had drawn a graph and attempted to zoom. When I was running Matlab under Windows I don’t remember having this problem.

Zut alors! Ce n’est pas très sympa.

en chaleur

On my way to work today I saw two dogs taking a keen interest in one another.

The owner of one of the dogs says to the other, “Elle est en chaleur.”

I think to myself: Sometimes direct translation doesn’t work. And sometimes it does.

* I will probably increase the hits per day my site gets with this post, especially if I add the words “jeune femme”…

Le premier dimanche du mois!

Today was the first Sunday of the month. You all know what that means: Free entrance to a bunch of museums!

(For a good list of free things in Paris, I recommend to pick up the Paris 0 € book in a bookstore)

So, we went to La Conciergerie. It was one of the sites that are only free for the first Sunday of the month during the winter months.

The verdict? Overall, it wasn’t that impressive. There was an Armenian exhibition held inside that was more interesting than the Conciergerie itself. There were a few small rooms recreating life in the Conciergerie, complete with life-sized dummies and there was a small display of the history of the Concergiere up through the fall of Robespierre (during the middle of the French revolution). It certainly wouldn’t have been worth the full admission fare. Perhaps only with a combined Saint-Chapelle / Conciergerie fare and a genuine interest to visit such an historical site.

Still, there were two noteworthy items:

(1) The names of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette are there on the long list of people recorded as having been guillotined (click the picture below!).Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette

and

A guillotine blade

(2) A guillotine blade used in actually head-choppings-off (i.e. “the best cure for a headache”). Alas, the French revolution was before it’s time, though this one possibly saw action against a notorious murderer, Lacenaire, in 1836 (according to the caption below the blade).

Sainte Chapelle

Go visit Sainte-Chapelle instead… But go on a sunny day to fully appreciate the beautiful stained glass windows (one side in the morning and the other in the afternoon).

After the Concergerie we headed over to Notre Dame with the intention of listening to some pipe organ music. I was hoping to get to go up to the tower, as that is also free. However we took our time on the way over and the time of the last entry (45 minutes before “closing”) had already passed by the time we reached the cathedral. Oh well. My wife had already gone up once for the spectacular view of the Paris skyline, so I’ll have to live with those pictures. The crêpe au chocolat masion (though I still prefer nutella) we stopped to eat was a good tradeoff.

Here’s a photo from one of the many side chapels in the Cathedral.
