Timing…

It’s really important in judo, much more than speed… That’s all.

“…I don’t wear a cup nor a jock…”

I was listening to Beastie Boys when I heard the above lyric. It made me think of judo. It may be a bit suprising, but in France, some people do go “au naturel”.

soreness

Today was the first ’serious’ day of judo since the summer break. Two and a half months off has taken its toll. My sore muscles tell me that running and pushups work different parts of the body than you use in randori.

Lovely day for a picnic

We had a picnic today, French-style (In French: un pique-nique). The occasion was the end of the year for our Judo club and the beginning of the Summer break.

We were just outside the Parc Floral on the edge of Paris in the Bois de Vincennes (next to a huge Château: Château de Vincennes). A fair number of other people had the same idea, as the weather was quite nice and there was a Jazz festival going on nearby. It was a nice wooded area with plenty of green and fresher air than one can find in the confines of a city. Fortunately, there weren’t too many pesky bugs to ruin it.

People brought dishes to share and various things to much on (i.e. olives, cured meats, etc). There wasn’t so much bread and cheese though. However, I suppose that gets a boring after awhile anyways. My wife made 肉じゃが (nikujaga) and I made guacamole. Yum. Of course there was also wine, though only a single bottle (not as much as I expected).

Anyways, we ate, chatted, and had fun. It’s all about having a good time, enjoying life and the company of friends. C’était bon pour la santé.

Summer break for Judo

Today was the last day of Judo practice before the summer break. The gym, operated by Mairie de Paris ( the city of Paris), is closed for the summer, from the beginning of July to the beginning of September. This corresponds to the end of the school year and the summer holiday for students in France.

I suppose there’s no particular reason for it to be closed, but everyone needs a vacation now and then, even gymnasiums!

During the summer there is still practice at the L’Institut du Judo, referred to as “Le dojo d’été” (The Summer Dojo). It’s a bit farther and not as convenient. I don’t want my skills to degrade. However, I think I’ll use the extra freetime to take up yoga with my wife and finally enroll in some proper French classes… Still, I miss the Kodokan.
