Mixi!

A while ago I was invited to sign up for the popular social networking site in Japan called Mixi. I haven’t hardly touched it since I signed up. Today I logged in for the first time since I signed up put a link back to my blog. Will that get me more visitors?? (answer: not really)

Spike in European visitors…

Welcome denizens of the great countries of Europe!

I’ve noticed that there has been a recent spike in the number of European visitors to my blog.

At first I thought that it was due to my smart tagging of World Cup Soccer, i.e. La Coupe du Monde, in some of my recent blog posts. However, many entry pages were actually either from searching “paris” or “food”. A good combination, no?

If you are really interested in Paris and food, you should head on over to one of my favorite blogs, なせばなるなんとかなるさ (also on the righthand blogroll). Sorry, it’s mostly in Japanese, with only the occasional post in French or English. However, there are usually plenty of pictures to go with the posts about food and Paris (though the more recent posts are more text as they have been about World Cup Soccer).

Test of Flock 0.7.1 's blog tool

…test of Flock 0.7.1 ’s new blogging tool. I just downloaded and installed the latest version of Flock. The blogging tool doesn’t seem as convenient to use as the old tool with the previous version 0.5 of Flock that I had been using. However, they did seem to fix an annoying problem with cutting and pasting URL links (i.e. before you could only paste in the link dialog box if you copied the link after the dialog box was opened). Also, unfortunately my blog posts that I made under version 0.5 are no longer visible, though I have found the file containing my blog posts, “blog_alpha_02.rdf”, in the “C:\Documents and Settings\My user name\Application Data\Flock\Browser\Profiles\…default\” folder. I’ll see if I can find where the new version stores the blog posts and add the old posts to the file with the new posts somehow…

However, I may probably just start using a different blog editing software to prevent this from happening again in the future…

Le printemps est arrivé !

(so declared one of my office mates last week)

Spring has finally arrived! …after the mostly gray, cold, wet, rainy and generally dismal weather of March here in Paris.

The weather is clearing up and getting warmer. Birds are singing and trees are flowering and buding new leaves as nature springs back to life from its winter slumber. I’ve really missed this Spring transitional period during the past six years. In Austin there wasn’t much to Spring as most trees and plants thrived year-long without shedding their foliage. In Austin the only seasons are Summer (hot) and not-Summer (mild). I had no sense of the passing of the seasons. But now, I can really feel a kind of rejuvenation coupled with the return to life that Spring brings. It’s a feeling I haven’t felt in a long time! I have the sudden urge to frolic outside…

The other day I left work a little bit early (well ok, it was already 7pm) just to walk around and enjoy the beginning of Springtime outdoors with my wife. What was that song? …

I never knew the charm of spring
I never met it face to face
I never new my heart could sing
I never missed a warm embrace

Till April in Paris, chestnuts in blossom
Holiday tables under the trees
April in Paris, this is a feeling
That no one can ever reprise

I never knew the charm of spring
I never met it face to face
I never new my heart could sing
I never missed a warm embrace

Till April in Paris
Whom can I run to
What have you done to my heart

(by Vernon Duke and E. Y. Harburg, 1932)

Yes, April in Paris… What a nice time of year.

My “old” blog(s)

I sort of had a blog on myspace.com here. However, myspace isn’t so blog friendly and has troubles processing Japanese (i.e. it either garbles the text or will decide to eat half the post, likely because it is confused into thinking that the Japanese text is some html code), nor is the layout very easy to read (though I understand that it is possible to change the default layout).

(for more on myspace layouts try this nice post here.)

I eventually gave up on myspace, so I decided to start a proper blog on blogspot here. However, I noticed some shortcomings of blogspot, namely the lack of categories. SO, I started up my new blog on wordpress.com!

Hello World!

Hello, and welcome to my blog.

I am a U.S. citizen currently living in Tokyo, Japan. I had been meaning to start a blog ever since arriving in Japan last June. Now I’m finally starting one.

I’ll attempt to make it bilingual (or multilingual) as much as possible so that I can also use this opportunity to practice my written Japanese as well. Of course, making the blog multilingual has the extra added benefit of increased accessibility for the reader. ;-)

I’ll use this as a web log (or “blog”, if you will, haha) to chronicle my experiences living “abroad”, various musings, etc, and as a general diary for posterity.
